Tipsy Lemon Stitch Photo Tutorial

Image
A good friend and crochet mentor has two stitch loves in her life.  She adores the herringbone stitch (double or half double) and lemon peel stitch. Being in a creative mood, I decided to see what combining the two might bring and was very pleased with the results.  Based on the traditional lemon peel stitch pattern, it alternates herringbone double crochet with single crochet. The name Tipsy Lemon came from the fact that the herringbone stitch gives a slight tilt to the left to the lemon peel pattern, as though the crochet stitches had over imbibed just a little. For instructions on the herringbone double crochet stitch, follow this link: https://www.knitcrate.com/blogs/tumblr/crochet-stitch-herringbone-double-crochet Instructions Chain an uneven number of stitches as this pattern is worked in a 2 stitch repeat. Single crochet (SC) into second chain and across to form foundation row, chain 1 and turn. Half double crochet (HDC) first stitch, then herringbone double crochet (...

Tipsy Lemon Stitch Baby Hat

This newborn baby hat is part of my donation to a friend’s charity collection, and is inspired by Shelli, my crochet and blog mentor.  If you wish to make this larger for a 0-3 month old, use a 5.5mm hook. For instructions on how to complete the Tipsy Lemon stitch, please see the tutorial on my blog, by clicking or copying this link: https://kyliecrochets.blogspot.com/2020/05/tipsy-lemon-stitch-photo-tutorial.html?m=1 You will need Approximately 1 1/4 oz of #4 yarn (65 yd) 5.0 mm hook Yarn needle Scissors Finished size 5.5” diameter, by 5.5” high. Fairy Floss Newborn Beanie.

Image
I was helping a friend make some newborn hats for a charity she supports and couldn't resist playing with the textures of herringbone and 3rd loop HDC. When I showed it to her, she said the colours reminded her of cotton candy. Being an Aussie, I had to use the Australian name - Fairy Floss. This hat's quick and easy and took about 45 minutes to make. Finished Size Circumference 11", height 51/2" You will need Worsted weight yarn, approx 1 oz/50 yd 5.5 mm hook Yarn needle Scissors Abbreviations St Stitch Ch Chain HDC Half double crochet HHDC Herringbone half double crochet Sl st Slip stitch Notes You will be working into slip stitch in each round so keep stitch size even with other stitches. Ch 1 at beginning of each round doesn't count in stitch count.  You will also not slip stitch into this ch 1, but into the top of the first HDC in the round. For instructions on the 3rd loop HDC see here: https://www.mooglyblog.com/third-loop-half-double-crochet/ ...

Jay Jay's Star Beanie

Image
This beanie came about because a friend and fellow Aussie (Jay Jay) started an informal grass roots campaign amongst Australian expats, to feed and provide for the hygiene, clothing and warming needs of homeless people in Los Angeles.  Once a month he throws an Aussie bbq with his wonderful beef sausages (not brats or hotdogs, proper Aussie "snags") and hands out the other donated items. So I challenged myself to make as many beanies as I could, and create a quick and simple pattern that was easily remembered and replicated.  It's worked from the bottom up, which helps to control my tendency to end up with a wide and loose brim. The decrease at the crown creates a 6 point star burst effect.   To make different sizes - just switch up your hook and follow the same pattern!  It's also economical, as the yarn runs about $1.15 a hat, in commonly used jumbo skein brands.   Enjoy...and do me a favour, make an extra one or two when you can, to donate to c...
