Kelly's Surprise Baby Cardigan

As I mentioned in my last post, my cousin Kelly happily found herself pregnant after almost giving up hope.  This cardigan celebrates such a good surprise.
Kelly’s Surprise Baby Cardigan

You will need:
3.5 oz (approx. 200 yds) of worsted weight yarn
5.5 mm crochet hook
¾” button
Scissors
Yarn needle

This cardigan is designed for an approximately 3 month old baby.  You can make it for a younger child by decreasing to a 5.0 mm hook

Abbreviations
Ch    chain
St     stitch
Sl st     slip stitch
Ch sp    chain space
SC    single crochet
DC    double crochet
BLO back loop only
FLO front loop only
HBDC    herringbone double crochet

Herringbone double crochet

Gauge
7 rows DC or HDC x 11 DC = 4 inches

Pattern

Ch 39

Row 1
DC into 3rd st from hook (ch 3 does not count as stitch), then DC next 5 st, [DC, ch 1, DC] into next stitch, DC across next 4 st, [DC, ch 1, DC] into next st, DC across next 13 st, [DC, ch1, DC ] into next st, DC into next 4 st, [DC, ch 1, DC]  into next st, DC into remaining 6 st, ch 2 and turn (ch 2 does not count as a stitch now and throughout pattern).

Row 2
DC into first DC stitch,* HBDC into next st until ch space, [DC, ch 1, DC] into ch sp*, repeat from * to * to last chain space, HBDC until second stitch from end, DC into last st, ch 2 and turn.

Rows 3-6
Repeat row 2.

Row 7 (forms arm hole)
DC into first st, DC in all st until ch sp, *DC into chain stitch, ch 1 and DC into next ch st (skipping all stitches in between to form armhole)*, DC until next ch sp, repeat from * to *, DC to end, chain 2 and turn.

Row 8
DC into first st, FLO DC to second from last st, DC into last st, ch 2 and turn.

Row 9
DC into first st, BLO DC to second from last st, DC into last st, ch 2 and turn.

Row 10
DC into first st, skip next st, *2 DC into next st, skip next st*, repeat from * to * until 1 st remains, DC into last 2, ch 2 and turn.

Row 11
DC into first st, 2 DC in between 2DC in row below to form v stitch, continue between each 2 DC pair until last st, DC into last st, ch 2 and turn.

Rows 12-16
Repeat row 11.

Row 17
DC into first st, [DC, ch 1, DC] into next 2 DC pair and repeat until last st, DC into last st, and continue on to border (do NOT turn).

Border
Ch 1, SC into same stitch and SC evenly along left front border to top corner, 3 SC into corner.  SC into each st along top border and [SC 2, ch 2, SC 1] into corner stitch to form button hole. SC evenly along right front border, 3 SC into corner st, then SC into each st across bottom border, 2 SC into corner, sl st to first SC and finish off.

Sleeves (make 2)
Round 1
Fasten yarn into ch space in bottom of arm hole, ch 2 (counts as DC for all sleeve rows).  Evenly space 24 DC around arm hole, sl st to first DC and turn (24 DC)

Round 2
Ch 2, DC into same st and DC into remaining 23 stitches, sl st to first DC and turn (24 DC).

Round 3-8
Repeat row 2.

Round 9
Ch 2, DC into same st and DC into next 3 st, 2 DC together nex st,  *DC 4, 2 DC together*, repeat to end, sl stitch to first DC and NOT turn (20 DC).

Round 10
Ch 1, SC into same stitch and all remaining st, sl to to of first SC and finish off.

To finish
Attach button to top left corner of cardigan and sew in all ends.

    I love this pattern! My question is do you put a HBDC into both DC's in the increase (DC, CH1, DC)? Thanks

Lemons on the Line Washcloth

I’m blaming my dish and washcloth making friends for encouraging me, and now here’s another offering using the Tipsy Lemon stitch.  Thanks to Dianna for suggesting the name! This simple pattern is worked in an even number of stitches, in 6 row panels, so you can resize it to your liking. You will need: Approximately 1 ½  oz of worsted weight cotton (50 yds) 5.0 mm crochet hook Yarn needle Scissors Finished size: 9.5 x 9.5” Abbreviations: Ch Chain St Stitch SC Single crochet HBDC Herringbone double crochet HDC Half double crochet BLO Back loop only Notes: This pattern is worked in a repeating panel.  If you alter the sizes, you may want to consider adding extra row(s) of SC to top and bottom to square up the cloth.
